Historic Saint Paul

A PLACE ISN'T IMPORTANT WITHOUT A STORY.

Historic Saint Paul is a nonprofit organization, established in 1998, with a mission to preserve and promote the cultural heritage, character, and vitality of Saint Paul neighborhoods. Currently, we are entirely volunteer-led and run.

We work to preserve so that Saint Paul's cultural character reflects the unique stories and places of the diverse people who lived and worked here. We believe that a unique and reflective cultural character improves local community. The more that people feel connected to Saint Paul and their neighborhood, the more our city grows and thrives. 

Our work addresses two important problems that threaten Saint Paul's heritage, character, and vitality:

First, not all peoples' Saint Paul stories seem to matter equally. Saint Paul is and always has been a city of diversity, but not everyone's story is being told. We are working to elevate and preserve the stories of all people, past and present, in Saint Paul so that people today can see themselves and others as a part of Saint Paul's story.

Second, demolitions in Saint Paul harm our neighborhoods and environment. Demolitions, while often appearing easier, are not always better for our city. Maintaining our existing structures enriches our neighborhoods and environments. 

We are working to make historic preservation a key component of community place making and local economic development in Saint Paul. For all the reasons above, Historic Saint Paul exists to promote equitable preservation in our city. We do this by helping make preservation education and resources accessible, educating about the benefits of preservation for Saint Paul's community, advocating for preservation with city leadership, and supporting planning efforts with creative and beneficial preservation strategies.
