Hastings Family Service

Hastings Family Service (HFS) has been helping the people of Hastings and the surrounding communities meet their basic needs of food, shelter, transportation and clothing since 1970.  Our mission is to engage community to provide help and hope to our neighbors to achieve the vision of a caring and connected community where all neighbors can thrive.   

The recent reductions in SNAP (food stamp) benefits and delays caused by the government shutdown are impacting 42 million people in our country and 440,000 are neighbors in MN, with 36% being children and 18% seniors.  For every one meal provided by food shelves, nine meals are provided through SNAP assistance.  HFS is strategizing to provide more access and more food for impacted families, and will do all that we can to bridge the gap with your support.  Neighbors helping neighbors has always been our greatest source of help and hope!

Market Food programs snapshot:

Last  year, HFS provided 453,367 lbs of food to the people in our community while also reducing food waste through our food rescue partnerships with the local WalMart, Cub, Coborn's and Kwik Trip.    

*The Market is a choice-model emergency food shelf where neighbors can shop in-person or receive it through our drive-thru. 

*Market Cart - a mobile produce program taking fresh produce to senior living communities.

*Market Express - an express drive thru option providing a smaller food order.

*Market on the Move (MOM) - mobile food shelf programming that distributes food out into the community and is used for food rescue.   

*Meals on Wheels - 187 different neighbors received 21,906 meals last year.

The need is greater than ever.  Your gift to Hastings Family Service provides nourishment, warmth, and perhaps most importantly, HOPE. Every ten dollars donated can provide up to 50 lbs of food, so your gifts are stretched to help as many people as possible. 

In addition to Market programs, HFS offers financial assistance, services for people experiencing homelessness, Meals on Wheels, Just Friends transportation, free clothing and household items through our Rivertown Treasures thrift store, school supplies and Project Share holiday assistance programs, and a Business Center equipped with computers, a printer and phone that neighbors can use.
