Hastings Family Service (HFS) has been helping the people of Hastings and the surrounding communities meet their basic needs of food, shelter, transportation and clothing since 1970. The past couple of years brought many challenges for nonprofits like HFS, but nearly 52 years of experience and a supportive community helped HFS make the changes needed to help struggling families and feed hungry kids who traditionally make up over 50% of those we serve in the Market food shelf. In addition to the food shelf, HFS offers financial assistance, services for people experiencing homelessness, Just Friends transportation, clothing and household vouchers through our Rivertown Treasures thrift store, school supplies and Project Share holiday assistance programs, and Meals on Wheels.
In response to the pandemic, Hastings Family Service has implemented new and creative ways to serve our neighbors. We learned that we can serve more people utilizing a drive-thru food shelf model of pre-packed food orders based on family sizes to keep our staff, volunteers and the people we serve safe. When we resume in-person shopping in our choice model food shelf, we will continue to offer the drive-thru option as well for people who prefer that. We offer Market Express for neighbors who wish to receive smaller food orders, and Market Cart which is a mobile produce distribution to senior communities. And Meals on Wheels experienced a 33% increase last year in number of meals provided to help keep our seniors safely at home while still receiving warm meals and the nutrition they need. The goal is always to remove as many barriers as we can to ensure people have access to the food and nutrition they need for themselves and their families.
Your gift to Hastings Family Service provides nourishment, warmth, and perhaps most importantly, HOPE. Every ten dollars donated can provide up to 70 lbs of food, so your gifts are stretched to help as many people as possible. Thank you for considering a gift to Hastings Family Service to help care for neighbors in our community.
