Supporting Seniors with Independence, Dignity & Choice
Hamline Midway Elders (HME) helps older adults stay in their homes while keeping their independence, dignity, and ability to make choices. Since starting in 2001 as part of the Living at Home Network, HME has used a “neighbors helping neighbors” approach. This means both professionals and volunteers work together to support seniors and build strong community connections. At first, HME served the Hamline Midway neighborhood, but in 2015, we added the western part of Frogtown too.
What HME Does
HME focuses on two main services:
Helping seniors get the support they need to live on their own
Offering health and wellness programs that promote healthy habits, learning, and social activities
Even during the pandemic, HME found ways to keep helping. We followed safety rules and used both in-person and online classes so seniors could stay safe and connected.
Our Impact in 2024
In 2024, we helped 264 different seniors. Here’s what we did:
Over 500 times helping with service coordination
Over 400 friendly visits to seniors’ homes
Over 350 rides given by volunteers
Over 350 chores completed
Over 1,000 referrals to other helpful services
We also held more than 150 health and wellness events with over 2,000 people joining.
Some highlights:
1,115 meals served or delivered during monthly lunches with guest speakers
27 Tai Chi classes (about 7 people per class)
52 Chair Yoga classes (about 7 people per class)
50 Knitting group meetings (about 10 people per session)
Fun events like car BINGO, ice cream socials, and bake sales
Info sessions about Medicare and safe driving
Volunteers Make a Big Difference
In 2024, 64 individual volunteers and 10 volunteer groups gave over 2,000 hours of their time. They helped by:
Leading programs
Giving rides
Teaching classes
Helping with chores
Working Together
We team up with many groups like AARP, Hamline University, St. Paul Public Housing, Keystone Services, and more. These partnerships help us do even more for seniors.
Looking Ahead
We’ve noticed that seniors need more help with housing, food, transportation, and health care at home. In 2025, we plan to reach more people, offer more services, involve more volunteers, and run more programs. Our goal is to help seniors stay in their homes and feel happy, healthy, and connected.
