The Great Northern Festival celebrates our cold, creative winters with 10 days of programming that invigorates the mind, body, and spirit.
The 2022 festival examined the season and its elements from unexpected and innovative perspectives: an ice-encased, fully functioning greenhouse by artists Jovan C. Speller and Andy DuCett provided a space for Black life to thrive in harsh conditions; a troupe of five local Latinx performers shared a comedic take on adjusting to life in the North; and 50 local participants mounted a site-specific, collective dance on Como Lake.
Events were rooted in place, such as Learning from Place: Bdote, an outdoor experience inviting participants to expand their understanding of local sites with deep significance to the Dakota people. Others offered opportunities to explore unique experiences in the Twin Cities, including time at an anechoic chamber, one of the quietest places on Earth; thermic bathing programming throughout the city; and the outdoor festival launch party in NE Minneapolis.
Each of the 10 days featured expert voices through the Climate Solutions Series, and evenings were filled with music from dynamic artists like Naeem and Lyra Pramuk as well as a Lunar New Year celebration with the Minnesota Orchestra; world premiere performances; city-wide projected art; and much more.
