$1,500 Goal

The Golden Valley Garden Club is a dynamic network of gardeners at all levels of experience. We love to share our enthusiasm and knowledge of gardening, better our community and promote the conservation of our natural resources. We are a 501c3 charitable organization.

In recent years we've been addressing the needs of native pollinators. Pollinators are Keystone species, vital to maintaining healthy ecosystems; 80% of flowering plants need insects for pollination, as do 80% of the 1,400 food crops grown worldwide.  More than half of native bees are declining and vulnerable to extinction.  What can we do to support our native pollinators?

We are fundraising now to support a new research project involving pollinator pathways.  In order to connect the City’s existing - but isolated - green corridors and native buffer zones, we donated 7 new  pollinator pocket gardens to residents in an area that lacked established pollinator areas. (Think of rest stops along a freeway between 2 cities.)  Next year we'll also donate another 7 new gardens in the same area.

Our major expense is the independent entomologist we've hired for the 3-year research project.  We undertook this step because we wanted to determine if this approach worked to increase pollinators, and how well it worked.  We will publish our results each year, starting in 2025.  We have committed $1000 each year for 3 years to help pay for this research; we need an additional $1500 each year to cover these costs.

We envision this as a public-private-corporate effort that will provide a healthier environment for pollinators, pets and people for years to come.
