Global Mamas is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering financial well-being, happiness, and health for Ghanaian women and their families. For 16 years we’ve partnered with a talented community of Ghanaian craftswomen, the “Mamas,” allowing them to bring their handmade products to the international marketplace and build successful, sustainable livelihoods. Founded in 2003 by six women, the Global Mamas community today is 350 artisans strong. With over a decade behind us it’s inspiring to see our impact spread as financially independent women choose to make meaningful investments in their families and communities.
Economic empowerment will always be at the heart of our mission, but as a community of women and mothers we remain keenly aware of our environmental impact. While we do fairly well with 60% of our current catalog made from upcycled or recycled materials and the rest produced from organic cotton, we feel the urgent imperative to do more.
With your support in 2020 we plan to heavily invest our time, talents, and resources in expanding our range of eco-friendly initiatives – in both our actions, as well as with the products we produce.
A significant eco-friendly expansion in 2020 will be the debut of our new water weeds line. Currently in development at our Akuse location, this partnership with communities along the Volta River uses invasive water weeds as the raw material for an innovative collection of new natural fiber products.
Locally known as the “poison flower”, the water hyacinth weed is an aggressive weed that doubles its size in less than two weeks-- clogging waterways and negatively affecting water transport, power generation, health, agriculture, and fisheries. Our new project will help to rebuild the ecological integrity of the Volta River while using an abundant natural resource to create much-
needed alternative revenue streams for local communities.
