Here are some recent examples of just what kind of impact your support will have.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP:

In November we received the a wonderful update from our Entrepreneurship & Livelihoods program, describing the successful results from Give Us Wings' training and support around nutrition and business:

Vegetable growing has improved the nutrition of households and boosted women and youth economic status in Manafwa and Tororo districts.

128 vegetable gardens and kitchen gardens of assorted vegetables established by women and youth who are coop members for both economic purpose and boosting diet in families.

  • 50 kitchen gardens established around homes specifically for  improving the nutrition of families.
  • Increased incomes of women who involved in vegetable growing at least able to earn 2000/= -5000/= a day (about $.58 - $1.48) from the sale of vegetables.

HEALTH:

In September, representatives from Uganda's Ministry of Health visited our St. John's Kayoro Health Center as part of their annual assessment of health facilities nationwide. The team was very impressed with St. John's, specifically praising the level of privacy afforded to patients, the ambience of the clinic compound, and the effectiveness of our Community Health Insurance program in helping families avoid catastrophic medical expenditures. The commissioner and her team said they would be using St. John's as a benchmark facility for other clinics in the region, and pledged to provide additional technical and financial support for us to expand our health insurance program.

EDUCATION:

Oburu Gordian lives with his siblings and aunt Nyaketcho Annet. They used to live in the Bison Slums and now live with the Ngiyo Ber Women’s Group in safe housing. Gordian and his family were enrolled in the Family to Family program in 2015 when he was 7 years old. As soon as he was enrolled in the sponsorship program and started attending the high quality boarding schools, he achieved high marks. Gordian, now in Primary 6, recently wrote in a letter to his sponsors “thank you for removing me from the darkness and showing me the light.” Gordian was given hope and the ability to do well in school without having to focus on where money would come for school fees. Gordian enjoys reading and doing his school work. Annet sells tomatoes, onions, and eggs. Annet has had many health issues which has affected her business, but she has improved thanks to quality health care through Give Us Wings at St. John’s Kayoro Health Center, and is able to continue working towards growing her business. Gordian was able to realize some of his goals and told Annet that he wants to become a pilot in the future. During COVID-19, Gordian’s performance slipped somewhat, but Annet says that “he got back on track and he is getting Division 1 again which gives me hope that he will pass with flying colors.” Gordian is still working hard and persevering to reach his goals.
