Wetlands and shallow lakes within tallgrass prairie, the Detroit Lakes Wetland Management District (DLWMD) is a working landscape rich in agriculture, history, conservation, and tight-knit communities.
We support:
o Wildlife Habitat - By purchasing and restoring land and linking it to existing public lands, DLWMD is conserving one of the least protected habitat types in the world and its many native species.
o Economic Opportunities - We aim to create a positive economic impact in the area by increasing nature related tourism opportunities, which in turn will increase local spending, employment, and business opportunities.
o Public Enjoyment - DLWMD is open to the public for a wide range of recreation and educational uses.
By helping us restore and promote the wonders of the northern tallgrass prairie and its pothole wetlands, you are inspiring new generations of explorers to visit and appreciate this uniquely American landscape. The Friends of Detroit Lakes Wetland Management District and the work we do is completely funded by private donations, grants and the volunteering of time. We have successfully:
o Helped restore hundreds of acres of prairie and wetland habitat in northwestern Minnesota.
o Constructed the Hamden Slough Environmental Education Building, which with finishing touches will provide a safe starting point for educational prairie adventures.
o Developed new recreation opportunities, such as interpretive nature hiking trails and wildlife viewing platforms.
o Advanced stewardship and understanding of the Prairie Pothole Region through environmental education, outreach, and partnership development.
o Co-sponsored the annual Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds, as well as the annual Youth Waterfowl Hunt at Hamden Slough.
