Breaking barriers to ignite the curiosity in all of us.
The Fargo-Moorhead Science Museum (FMSM) will be a world-class, regional destination where curious minds –adults and children alike– can explore and engage in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, subjects collectively known as STEM. The museum will feature hands-on interactive exhibits and programming that promote science literacy and facilitate learning and exploration for everyone.
Permanent exhibits will integrate all aspects of STEM, featuring topics that uniquely focus on our region. A strong emphasis on natural history, from ice-age fossils and Glacial Lake Agassiz to the nature of the Red River Valley soils, will offer guests an appreciation of our unique environment, along with its engineering challenges and agricultural wealth. Year-round rotating programming will allow visitors to have a novel experience each time they visit. Community classrooms and event spaces will be available to the public. A museum-based mobile outreach team will provide STEM programming and activities for the FM community and beyond.
What We Stand for
We will break down barriers to STEM learning. STEM learning develops critical thinking, collaboration and innovation in students and adults, engaging them in hands-on learning and encouraging them to work with others to find the ideas we need to build resilient economies and vibrant communities.
ECONOMIC BARRIERS - Everyone, at every income level, must be able to experience STEM learning. The FMSM will offer open access to students and lifelong learners.
LANGUAGE BARRIERS - The FMSM will ensure any speaker full access to our exhibitions, programs, digital resources and communications.
GEOGRAPHIC BARRIERS - Rural residents often cannot access the benefits of hands-on STEM learning, so we’ll bring it to them through mobile exhibitions and programs. We’ll have remote learning opportunities, too.
TRANSPORTATION BARRIERS - We’ll work with Metro Transit and other transportation providers to make it possible for any visitor in the area to get here.
PHYSICAL ABILITY BARRIERS - Physical access will be a central consideration to our facility’s core design and our exhibition planning.
OUR MISSION: Breaking barriers to ignite the curiosity in all of us.
WE THINK CREATIVELY – As professionals within our local science community, we have decades of experience in science teaching and outreach.
WE’RE A PART OF THIS COMMUNITY – We’re connected to businesses, universities, schools, and artists throughout the region, and we’ll bring them all together in one place.
WE BELIEVE IT IS TIME – A recent survey of more than 2,500 community members revealed that 99% support a permanent science museum.
WE WANT COLLABORATION – The Fargo-Moorhead Science Museum will centralize groups and
individuals already doing science outreach, bringing them together with a wider audience in a setting open to all.
