Help, Hope, and Healing
Imagine you’re a kid from northern Minnesota and you just told your teacher you’re being hurt at home. Years ago this would mean being required to tell your story multiple times to police officers, social workers, school administration, doctors, and more. Reliving your traumatic experience would be scary, uncomfortable and hinder your recovery process.
FACNM is the only place a rural Minnesota child needs to go after instances of abuse.
The Family Advocacy Center of Northern Minnesota (FACNM) was founded in 2005 from a vision that children heal more effectively when supportive agencies work together as an integrated team. Instead of a child visiting a police station, social services office, and having multiple medical appointments they visit our center and all of the professionals involved in the case come to them. The child is in a safe, welcoming space and talks about their experience with a forensic interviewer who is trained to listen to kids. The rest of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) comprised of a child and family advocate, law enforcement investigator, prosecutor, child protection investigator and forensic medical staff work together at FACNM to mitigate the child’s trauma, provide medical care, coordinate mental health care, and provide ongoing support to help children and families recover from the trauma of abuse or violence. Your support makes all of this possible.
