Exposed Brick Theatre is a Twin Cities based theater company. Founded in 2004, we are dedicated to telling untold stories, centering omitted narratives & creating art at the intersection of identities. Our 2023 season, entitled “Echoes & Reflections”, features three productions that explore how the past reverberates into the present and shapes the future. Exposed Brick is the 2022 recipient of the Seeding Cultural Treasure award, an initiative to nourish and cultivate the landscape of emerging arts and culture organizations run by and for Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC)
“When the theater we participate in echoes and reflects our stories and experiences authentically, we feel seen, heard and moved to create. We want artists and communities who don’t consistently see themselves and their stories reflected back in theater to go from feeling othered to owning the stage. This goes well beyond representation but extends to building culturally responsive practices in how theater is made and shared. In 2023 and beyond we want to echo stories that reverberate into a feeling of “I Belong Here” “This is a place for me.” – Aamera Siddiqui, Co-Artistic Director
CHANGING THE CANON - ONE STORY AT A TIME
We intentionally work with artists from specific communities to write plays that reflect their communities back to themselves. In doing so, we are changing the canon of plays which has been dominated by white men who have long passed away and expanding to include more voices from communities whose representation in theater has been limited . We want our programming to create reflections where students and adults see themselves represented and know that theater has a place for them.
Mainstage Performances: In 2023, there will be two world premieres, Code You by Nora Montañez Patterson and Muyehpen by Ehkudah Zar; and one regional premiere, Passage by Christopher Chen (co-production with Pillsbury House Theatre)
Emerging Playwright Cohort: We will support 10 early career BIPOC playwrights through a 12 week playwriting intensive. Participants will engage in writing workshops and will receive support in creating original works for the stage.
Through Our Eyes New Play Development: We support BIPOC playwrights in creating original plays that we support through the writing, development and production phases. In 2023, we will work with 5 playwrights in developing the scripts that will appear in future years in our season.
Education/Residencies: We continue our partnership with St Paul Public Schools and CLIMB theater in which Exposed Brick Theatre will design and co-teach a six-week social justice summer theater course to 6-8 grade students. Additionally, we do social justice theater workshops and residencies at several area high school schools.
Equity Diversity Inclusion Trainings: At Exposed Brick we are not just making change in our own organization, but we are impacting change by working with granting organizations, arts organizations and their Boards of Director. As experienced and trained facilitators, we use a theater and storytelling based approach to creating equity and inclusion in the arts sector.
Exposed Brick Theatre’s impact and reach continues to grow because of your generous support and belief in our mission. A donation of any amount helps us build a theater culture where all communities experience theater from a place of belonging.
