Helping Homeless Children and Youth in Bemidji. Bemidji has a growing population of homeless youth and young adults. The Evergreen Shelter is a safe place for youth who are homeless, runaways or in crisis. Here's what homeless children and youth say they like about the Shelter:
Everything; Feeling accepted; They feed you; I am
not afraid to talk to anyone; It’s not
too strict and we get to do fun stuff; The
staff are supportive; It’s nice and
cozy; It feels like family; Fun; The staff; Playing pool; Meeting new
people; It was like home; The beds are very comfortable; I like that the staff are nice; They help!
We updated many things at our Shelter site over the past few years, after the pitter patter of 350 pairs of feet every year, things were wearing out...like, carpet, plumbing, bathroom tile, even the kitchen floor and cabinets! We are excited about how much more pleasant and comfortable the space is for children and youth. Our deep appreciation goes to several state foundations, Habitat for Humanity's awesome volunteers, and a very generous private donor who commented that "The facility should match the quality of the services being provided."
The Evergreen Safety Net of Services
From emergency shelter to transitional housing, mental health counseling, an on-site nurse, and independent living skills, there is a safety net of services for runaway, homeless, and high risk children, youth, and young families at Evergreen. Our Evergreen Youth Services site is now in the 6th year of a relocation to an apartment building that was designed for programs and services and our business offices, as well as youth apartments upstairs. In addition to on-site youth apartments on the upper level, our Youth Drop-in Center has warm meals, a shower, laundry, computers, as well as applications for jobs, housing, and mainstream benefits. We are a designated youth food shelf and can help homeless youth and young families with food bags, diapers, winter coats, clothing and personal hygiene items. Please visit www.evergreenyfs.org for more information on our Youth Services site and Youth Crisis Shelter.
