Impacting Ethiopian Children and Families through Literacy and Learning

Ethiopia Reads is on a mission to inspire a generation of young minds to think big and dream the impossible.

We promote literacy and access to libraries, books, and learning resources in villages and cities throughout Ethiopia, and we’d like you to join us.

We collaborate with communities and organizations in Ethiopia to build and sustain libraries so that children have access to books and school materials and a safe, welcoming place to develop a love of learning.

Programs:

Now in our 25th year Ethiopia continues to build on the successes of the past and innovate for the present and future.

  • Libraries in urbans and rural areas
  • Apartment and condo libraries
  • Donkey and horse mobile libraries to farming and village areas
  • Books to displaced families in refugee camps where no books are available
  • Librarian and educator training
  • Annual Children’s Reading Summit in Addis Ababa
  • Children’s Reading Festivals
  • Distribution of thousands of local language books across Ethiopia

Ethiopia Reads serves over 130,000 children and their families each year—children who would otherwise lack access to books and learning opportunities. In the most remote parts of the country we operate a “horse-powered” library, as in a horse that goes “neeeigh”.  He carries books to groups of children who wait in great anticipation to open the cover of an exciting story and enter a world of wonder and discovery.

We believe in the power of literacy to spark the imagination, to encourage creativity, to transform lives.

You can give a child the tools and confidence they need to grow and succeed by donating today. Together, we can empower an entire generation.

Ethiopia Reads Fast Facts: Founded in 1998. We planted over 80 libraries in every region of Ethiopia. We own and operate several libraries in Addis Ababa and Hawassa.  Since 2011, we have given away nearly 200,000 books to children throughout the country.
