As I celebrate my first year in the position of Executive Director, I am extremely thankful to the board of directors, staff, volunteers, and our patrons who maintain a deep love of cinema and film-related educational experiences. All of us have a heartfelt appreciation for the hundreds of donors, sponsors, and supporters who are an integral part of our organization and a vital part of Ely’s cultural community. Ely’s Historic State Theater would not exist without you.

Guided by the above, we at Ely’s Historic State Theater offer you the possibility to transform the way you see the world through our films and programs. Whether it's our first-run movies, unique and varied documentaries, or numerous special community-based events, we provide people in Ely and the surrounding area with opportunities to deepen our understanding of the world around us, see ourselves in a new light, and—often—simply be entertained.

Since its construction and opening in 1936, Ely’s Historic State Theater has been a welcoming place for moviegoers to experience the magic of film. For generations, the State Theater served as an important entertainment venue and community gathering place. With movie industry changes and with an aging building infrastructure, the State Theater was closed in 2008. A new chapter began in 2014 when the Ott family purchased the theater with plans to bring it back to life. In July 2015, the State Theater was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In early 2020, a nonprofit organization was formed by community members dedicated to managing and maintaining this cultural gem. The official opening was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic until mid-2020. With its rich history, welcoming vibes, and vibrant programs, Ely’s Historic State Theater is once again a beloved gathering spot where the community connects, stories are shared, and the arts flourish.

As we move into autumn, our focus is on Give to the Max month, the annual giving campaign that is one of our fundraising cornerstones. Mark your calendars! Early giving begins on November 1, with Give to the Max Day on Thursday, November 20, 2025. With your support, we surpassed our goal of $15,000 in 2024. We are asking for your support again to help reach our goal of $20,000 for this year.

Thank you again for your support. See you at the movies!
