BE THE VOICE.
Help change what happens next for older adults.
Larry Thompson was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and a proud Vietnam veteran. His family trusted that he would be safe in assisted living.
But when Larry needed help most, no one came to his rescue.
His mobility scooter tipped over, pinning him against a wall and cutting off his airway. For several agonizing minutes, he struggled to breathe while staff members stood by, following a “no-lift” policy.
Larry suffocated.
His death was preventable.
“How could they just stand there and do nothing?”
That was the heartbreaking question his daughter, Adrienne Sloan, asked after watching the video of her father's final moments.
Adrienne refused to let her father's death be in vain. And neither did Elder Voice Advocates. Elder Voice Advocates led the effort to bring Larry's story to lawmakers, challenged dangerous practices, and fought for change that could save lives.
In 2026, Larry's Law passed with bipartisan support. The new law will require assisted living staff members to respond to medical emergencies, with trained staff around the clock.
But Larry isn't the only one. Every day, older adults continue to experience abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Families are searching for answers, accountability, and someone willing to help stand up for them.
We cannot fight for the next Larry without you. Grants cannot fund EVA's legislative work. Your donation gives us the power to stand alongside families, and fight for stronger protections, and life-saving laws.
Larry's Law shows what's possible. Your gift helps us fight for the next family. Will you be the voice to help change what happens next? Make your donation today.
With gratitude,
Kristine Sundberg, Executive Director
P.S. Every gift, no matter the size, helps us build a future where older adults can age safely, with the dignity and care they deserve.
“I hope no other family ever has to experience what we did.”
