Diverse Reads

A nonprofit organization

Diverse Reads was founded to provide teachers with searchable excerpts from contemporary books that reflect today’s students for reading instruction, social studies, history, English Language Arts, and more.

We offer a range of content that reflects various social, economic, and cultural backgrounds and various lifestyles, experiences, and interests published by large, small, and independent publishers as well as nonprofit and public institutions. Educators are able to incorporate the excerpts into lessons to help students understand their world, encourage reading, and promote learning about each others’ experiences and perspectives.

We aim to tackle the Education Gap, which has been growing since 2008, and increasingly falling along socioeconomic lines, affecting white and non-white students alike. To improve reading, students need to read regularly, and students read more when the content is relevant to their lives.

Diverse Reads is a community.

We are a community of educators, book lovers, social justice activists, publishers, parents, and more collectively working together to ensure that all of our students feel welcome and seen at school. Join us by submitting excerpts from published works or using them in your classroom.

All donations will be used to support the costs for developing and maintaining Diverse Reads as a community resource.
