Dads of Down Syndrome Inc

Dads of Down Syndrome (DODs) was founded out of a journey of love, surprise, and discovery. 

DODs founder, Jacob Esser, quickly felt the lack of community, specifically for fathers of a child with Down syndrome when his son Levi was born at 9lbs, 10 toes and an extra 21st chromosome. There was need for a dedicated space where dads could connect, share experiences, and support one another. 

While many families in the Down syndrome community have found support and connection, Jacob noticed there was no unique space tailored specifically for fathers. He set out to create an opportunity for fellow dads to discuss parenting journeys, the challenges they faced, the milestones they celebrated, and the ways they could best support their children. 

DODs was built on the belief that fathers become better parents, advocates, and cheerleaders for their children when they can learn from one another. With that in mind, Esser gathered four other dads for an informal meet-up over a beer. The honesty, pride, celebration, and connection that emerged from that conversation were unparalleled. When asked if they should meet again, the response was unanimous: "How about next month?" 

Since February 2024, Twin Cities DODs has hosted monthly events, bringing together groups as large as 25 dads, with participation continuing to grow each month.
