On a warm August afternoon, neighbors and friends gathered on a rolling prairie near Horseshoe Lake to celebrate a remarkable milestone. The Hruska family — whose roots in Le Sueur County reach back more than a century — permanently protected their 152-acre family farm, now known as the Horseshoe Lake Wildlife Management Area.

For generations, the Hruskas cared for their land with deep respect — keeping their fields free from chemicals, nurturing healthy soil, and welcoming wildlife home. This year, with support from Clean River Partners, and in partnership with the Trust for Public Land and Great River Greening, that care became permanent.
