Our name, Communitas, is a long one, but it defines us! It is Latin derived and its definition is "a community of people with a mission beyond themselves".
Our mission has been to bring resources to people who are living on the margins. We meet them in their experiences and honor their worldviews by bridging social, economic, racial, educational and opportunity gaps.
Established in 2009, we work within St. Paul among those who are impoverished and unhoused. Through genuine relationships formed in a faith based gathering one Saturday each month, we support more than 50 people as they grow spiritually, emotionally, and socially.
Many people within this community face serious challenges such as losing housing, access to transportation, acquiring and maintaining employment and obtaining medical care because when a crisis hits, they lack the support system to hold them up while facing disparities and discrimination. Our goal is to ensure that they do not fall further and offer a safety net by providing resources specific to their needs when a crisis occurs.
Here are just two examples from 2025:
Albert, who lives in Section 8 housing and is employed, recently underwent a partial foot amputation due to complications from diabetes and an infection. As a result, he was no longer able to work and lost his job. He had no income as he waited for supplemental programs to begin. With the loss of income he was unable to afford food or the wound care items which cost hundreds of dollars.
Communitas Twin Cities stepped in and has been able to provide Albert with medical products and food as well as assistance in navigating the unemployment process.
Donald, an army veteran, lives in Veterans Affairs (VA) subsidized housing on a meager Social Security allowance. Due to government funding cuts that were made, he no longer receives assistance for his electric bill and is unable to afford it. If Donald could not maintain payment on this bill he was going to lose his VA housing as he needs to demonstrate stability.
Communitas Twin Cities stepped in to ensure his electric bill was caught up to give Donald breathing room.
