At the Center for Broadcast Journalism we are mobilizing the next generation of journalists to advance representation in media. Our mission is to provide emerging journalists with the essential reporting experience, education, and professional connections needed to secure positions in local newsrooms, thereby strengthening and diversifying the journalism workforce. Here are three ways we’ve done that this year:
Diversifying Newsrooms & Local Coverage
Aaliyah Demry, pictured above on the left, is a talented journalist from North Minneapolis who completed our program in 2023 and is now a morning reporter and anchor at KTTC-TV in Rochester, Minnesota. Similarly, Angeline Patrick Pacheco, who participated in our summer program, recently had her byline on the front page of the Pioneer Press. Our alumni are making their mark at respected organizations, including Minnesota Public Radio, Sahan Journal, and Lemonada Media.
Providing Access & Reporting Experience
In July, we equipped seven young people with their own cameras, microphones and audio recorders, and then engaged them in a four-week Summer Journalism Intensive to prepare them for work opportunities inside local newsrooms. Through our program, our emerging journalists got to work inside the Star Tribune, Pioneer Press, and Minnesota Spokesman Recorder. Our partners Ramsey County Workforce Solutions and SPNN played a tremendous role in helping us build out this high-impact program which earned its own media coverage.
Serving Community: How our FM station is helping advance our mission
In 2023, CBJ became the owner of Power 104.7 an FM station that serves the East Side and West Side neighborhoods of Saint Paul. Throughout the year, our station’s website and airwaves amplify the reporting of our journalists providing them professional print, digital and broadcast experience. This August, we hosted a music festival to engage and grow our audience and over 1,700 of our listeners showed up. Power 104.7 is allowing us to demonstrate how media can better serve diverse communities while also being a vehicle for training the next generation of journalists.
