At the Center for Broadcast Journalism (CBJ) we are mobilizing the next generation of journalists to advance representation in media. Our mission is to provide emerging journalists with the essential reporting experience, education, and professional connections needed to secure positions in local newsrooms, thereby strengthening and diversifying the journalism workforce. Here are three ways we’ve done that this year:
Diversifying Newsrooms & Local Coverage
For the past three summers, we equipped more than 30 young people with their own cameras, microphones and audio recorders, and then engaged them in a four-week Summer Journalism Intensive to prepare them for work opportunities inside local newsrooms. Through our program, our emerging journalists got to work inside the Star Tribune and Pioneer Press. Our high-impact program has earned its own media coverage.
Our alumni are making their mark at respected organizations, including Minnesota Public Radio, Sahan Journal, KTTC (Rochester TV affiliate), Valley View Live, Minnesota Spokesman Recorder, Lemonada Media and so many more.
Serving community: How our FM station is helping advance our mission
In 2023, CBJ became the owner of Power 104.7 an FM station that serves the East Side and West Side neighborhoods of Saint Paul, but with worldwide reach via the Internet (power1047.fm). Throughout the year, our station’s website and airwaves amplify the reporting of our journalists providing them professional print, digital and broadcast experience. This past August, we hosted our annual music festival, 7th Street Live, to engage and grow our audience and more than 1,700 of our listeners showed up. Power 104.7 is allowing us to demonstrate how media can better serve diverse communities while also being a vehicle for training the next generation of journalists.
Join us in mobilizing the next generation of journalists
We invite you on this journey with us as we continue to mobilize emerging journalists to advance representation in media. With your help imagine how much more we can do! Your contribution helps us educate and equip a new generation of journalists with what they need to succeed.
