After graduating from Glad Tidings Bible Institute in San Francisco, CA in 1938, Rev. Gordon K. Peterson pioneered churches in Nebraska and Kansas. In 1946, God called Rev. Peterson and his wife Irene to pioneer a new work in Minneapolis. Calvary Temple (Evangelistic Association) began as an independent, interdenominational church that grew into a large, city-wide ministry that came to be known as "SOULS HARBOR," offering a Bible School, radio and TV broadcasts, a summer camp, conference center, and many other effective outreaches. During its greatest days of growth, Calvary Temple worshipped at such places as the Lyceum Theater, and the Nicollet Hotel to accommodate the growing congregation and the needs of the ministry. Many great pastors, missionaries, and ministries were sent out from Calvary Temple.
In October of 1984, while preaching in Baton Rouge, LA, Rev. Peterson went home to be with the Lord. His mantle was passed on to his son, Gordon K. Peterson, Jr., who along with his wife Nancy, took over as Senior Pastors of Calvary Temple. Under its new leadership, the church continued to be faithful to its original vision, making a difference in the Minneapolis area. After seeing the congregation move in and out of various temporary facilities, Pastor Gordon and Nancy, moved the church to our current location, and in 1997, the name was changed to Calvary Worship Center. In June of 2003, after nearly 20 years as Senior Pastors, Pastor Gordon and Nancy Peterson retired from the ministry.
In October of 2003, Pastor Trey Williford accepted the call to become only the third pastor in Calvary Worship Center's 56 year history. He, along with his wife Jennifer, and their infant son Jake moved to the Twin Cities. After three years of ministry Pastor Trey Williford and his family returned to their native state of Texas.
The church then went through about a six month season where the elders ministered to the saints. At the end of the six months, God brought us Rev. Mark M. Marxhausen and his wife Julie. He became the new Senior Pastor of Calvary Worship Center on April 1, 2007. On December 1, 2011; Pastor Mark Marxhausen accepted a position as the new Senior Pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Master in Brooklyn Center and began the task of sheparding both congregations. Then, after more than six years of ministry at Calvary Worship Center, God called Pastor Mark Marxhausen to concentrate all of his efforts in sheparding the Lutheran Church of the Master: so on August 29, 2013; Pastor Mark Marxhausen resigned as Senior Pastor of Calvary Worship Center.
After meeting in several different locations, in August of 2013 Bishop Reginald Lewis applied to use the Lutheran Church of the Master facility as a meeting place for his congregation, Giving in Grace Christian Center. However, due to scheduling conflicts they would not be able to meet at their usual time of 10:00 AM: the earliest the could meet was 12:45 PM. So when Pastor Mark Marxhausen resigned from Calvary Worship Center it was suggested that maybe they could have a combined worship service with Calvary Worship Center while we looked for a new Senior Pastor. On November 23, 2013 Dr. Reginald Lewis was officially installed as the new Senior Pastor of Calvary Worship Center.
Bishop Lewis was born and raised in Texas, but in 1987 he was lead of the Holy Spirit to move to Minneapolis where, in august of that same year, he married his wife Dr. Paris Lewis. They have four children: Micah, Shutavia, Rochelle, and Reginald Jr. In November of 1994 Dr. Lewis became founder and Senior Pastor of Giving in Grace Christian Center located in Brooklyn Center. Bishop Lewis received his Doctorate degree in Pastoral Care and Theology from the Minnesota School of Theology in 2003 and was ordained a Bishop in February of 2007.
Pastor Paris Lewis grew up in north Minneapolis where she took part in the old SOULS HARBOR bus ministry. Therefore, in honor of her “homecoming” and the unifying of Calvary Worship Center and Giving in Grace Christian Center the name has been changed to Giving in Grace @ Souls Harbor.
