Your donations help the Burroughs PTA provide educational support both inside and outside the classroom, including important educational programs like field trips and a variety of enrichment materials for reading, math, science, art, music, physical education, the library and much more. The PTA also supports initiatives with various Burroughs committees. This includes Families for Equity and Justice (FEJ) which hosts guest speakers for the Burroughs community and highlights diversity throughout the year. As well, PTA funds community and school projects and staff wellness breakfasts hosted by the Social and Emotional Wellness Committee (SEW).
The Social and Emotional Wellness Committee's mission is to support the social and emotional wellbeing of Burroughs students, staff and families by listening to the needs of the community, advocating for existing district-level social and emotional learning resources, offering new learning opportunities and evidence-based tools, and striving for inclusive practices that honor diversity, equity and justice. We partner with school staff to implement fun and creative school-wide projects for students that support their social and emotional wellness like last year's resilience tree mural. We also provide content and support for families through the weekly Burroughs Bulletin and by hosting speakers on topics like mental health, resilience, and mindfulness.
Burroughs Families for Equity and Justice (FEJ) has a mission to ensure the Burroughs community is welcoming and inclusive of all. FEJ aims to accomplish this through six teams: Classroom Champions (organizing and supporting no-cost ways for parents to connect and students to deepen relationships outside of school); Diverse Books/Literature (ensuring diverse books are part of the Burroughs experience through efforts such as recognizing Heritage Months and coordinating with teachers and staff); Community Service (creating opportunities for community service projects that involve students in all grade levels); Community School Connections (connecting to other pipeline and neighborhood schools and collaborating with Justice Page and Washburn); Events (raising awareness around issues of equity and inclusion including hosting events, trainings and discussions that focus on how to talk to kids about race and how to plan diversity in the classroom); and Internal School Connections (coordinating with internal Burroughs groups such as the Site Council and the Equity Team to collaborate on the initiatives and support policies that ensure all families feel aware of and included in school activities.
