BRKFST Dance Company's Creative Endeavors
BRKFST Dance Company: collaborative breaking choreographers based in St. Paul, MN and founded in 2014. BRKFST’s egalitarian, choreographic collaboration is deeply-rooted in the Hip Hop adage, "Each One Teach One": regardless of class, race, experience, age or gender, everyone remains both teacher and student. BRKFST's lineage is breaking and hip hop culture: earning respect from battles and embodying inclusivity by passing down their knowledge to the new generation. The lived experiences of this collective who are working class, queer, femme and BIPOC, inform their compositions.
BRKFST Dance Company articulates the lived experience of diverse and contemporary artists, contests society's expectations of their chosen form by placing breaking in unconventional environments, and complicates the medium of dance itself by incorporating abstract, narrative, and pedestrian movement into their impressive, rigorous, and physically-virtuosic compositions.
BRKFST performs regionally, premiering work at Walker Arts Center, The Southern Theater, The Cowles Center and Orchestra Hall with The Minnesota Orchestra. They completed their first international tour in 2022, performing in Dublin, Ireland for Dance2Connect (D2C) Hip Hop Festival. Their film “Dreamers” (2019) was deemed an official selection in 11 international film festivals receiving “Grand Jury Award'' (In/Motion Festival 2021) and “Best Experimental Film” (Tirana International Film Festival 2020). BRKFST has set repertoire and original work on dancers at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, Carleton College, D2C Festival, and Bates Dance Festival. BRKFST Dance Company's most recent accomplishment is receiving the 2022 New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) National Dance Project (NDP) Production Grant.
