Growing a library for Aurora Charter School

     At Aurora Charter School, our mission is to operate a center of learning that embraces academic excellence and celebrates the gift of Latino culture. The school opened in September 2000 and serves Kindergarten-8th grade with more than 440 students (99% of those students are Hispanic youth from low income families.) Our educational program is a 90/10 Spanish-English Dual Language program.  Embedded in our program is a focus on environmental literacy and cultural education. 

     We believe the students at Aurora Charter School in Minneapolis, like all students, deserve the best education to lead them on a path toward the most productive, successful lives possible. A critical foundation to that success is having the ability to read—and having access to excellent books and reading material. To support this goal and embedded initiatives, we are striving to enhance the resources available to students through our media center and library.  

     With that in mind, we are gathering donations to grow a library for Aurora Charter School where students have access to a wide selection of books that will support the three main pillars of our Dual Language program.

     In addition to this, our commitment to environmental education is key to our academic model.  Now that we have a larger space for our library, we are excited to create a section dedicated entirely to environmental education and ecological awareness.

Our specific needs in our media center are listed below:

1. Spanish authored books

2. Fiction and non-fiction environmentally focused books

3. Books that facilitate and promote the understanding of cultures around the world.
