Atwater Area Living at Home Block Nurse Program

Our mission is to support seniors so they may stay in their homes and in their community as long as safely possible.

In 1988 a group of Atwater citizens decided the town needed a program to help the seniors living here.  They had heard of the Living At Home Block Nurse neighborhood model in the Twin Cities and recreated it in Atwater.  We became the first outstate program in Minnesota.  Our mission is the same now as it was in 1988 - to serve the senior population of our town and the surrounding townships. We are a non-profit 501 (c) 3 program providing information, social and support services to seniors in Atwater, Gennessee, Harrison, Acton and Lake Elizabeth Townships and all of the 56209 zip code.

Our "work force" is volunteers with two hired staff people.  Services provided:

• Rides! Rides! Rides!  When seniors need transportation we try to help: to church, social events, and appointments
• Help with errands, groceries, and mail
• Companionship, friendly visits, telephone assurance
• Caregiver Respite
• Light housekeeping
• Socialization
• Free Bone Builders exercise program, Pilates, yoga, and walking programs
• Information
• Service coordination
• AND MUCH MORE

 We no longer provide any type of medical/nursing service but help seniors connect with the various entities in our area that provide medical services.

 The financial support for our program comes from a DHS Live Well at Home grant, United Way Grant, City of Atwater, Gennessee, Harrison, Acton and Lake Elizabeth Townships along with memorials and donations from individuals.  The program is governed by a volunteer board of 9 members.  They meet once a month to conduct the business of the program.
