Every classroom, every faith group and every neighborhood is touched by hunger. Today, 1 in 10 Minnesotans, including 1 in 7 kids, faces hunger. Since the Great Recession, there has been slow but steady progress in reducing Minnesota's food insecurity rate, reaching a still-unacceptable decade-low in recent years. But, economic hardship created by the pandemic and pervasive inequities have undone this progress.
Second Harvest Heartland is working to change that. As one of the largest food banks in the nation, we work in close partnership with a network of 360 food shelves and nearly 1,000 partner programs who are delivering much-needed food directly to neighbors experiencing hunger in Minnesota and western Wisconsin.
This past year, Second Harvest Heartland has helped provide more than 119 million pounds of food – 105 million meals side-by-side with our partners in hunger-relief, serving more than a half-million people. But, as much as we wish the end was in sight, we still have many tough months in front of us, and we need your help to end hunger here in the heartland.
Bobby Brown, a fifth-grade math and special education teacher, recently moved home to help his mother, who is sick. He misses teaching, but he’s grateful to be around for his family, including all the fixings for a Thanksgiving meal from the [food shelf].
