Some of you reading this will have joined me in the past on one or more of my walks or climbs for the Children of Africa (50 cents sends a book which can possibly be read by 50 children). Now 87 my walks are not as ambitious as they once were. However I know I have this one day 11 mile walk in me and many of you do too! We will be walking from the Minneapolis Downtown Library to the St Paul Downtown Library. This is one of the state's most beautiful walks, along the Mississippi River and then down Summit Avenue. You can also choose to walk part of the route.
Our goal is to raise sufficient funds to send a container of books (to include a law library for the Women Lawyers Association) to Uganda. The idea for Books For Africa came from a visit to a library in Jinja, the Source of the Nile, so it is only fitting that Minnesota, the Source of the Mississippi, be raising these funds in our 35th year. To honor the ancient Founder it is suggested that pledges be in multiples of 87!
The plan is to assemble at Mocha Momma's Coffee Shop at the entrance to the Minneapolis Downtown Library and leave there at 9.30 and wend our way the 4 1/2 miles to the Lake Street Bridge over the Mississippi. There are opportunities there for food and drink. However, depending on weather and number of walkers, it might be wise to carry food and water. We leave the Lake Street Bridge at 12.45 pm which gets us to the St Paul Library at about 4 pm This figures a leisurely speed of 2 mph to include pauses along the way.
Here are some option for those want to pledge and join the Walk for shorter distances (times are approximate):
Bohemian Flats Park, 2 miles in, 10.30 am, 2150 West River Parkway, toilets and parking,
Annie Young Meadow Park, 3 miles in, 11 am, 2901 West River Parkway, toilets and parking
Lake Street Bridge, 4.5 miles in, leave at 12.45 pm, patio in front of Longfellow Grill and coffee shop
Kowalski's, 2 pm (very approximate) Summit and Syndicate, parking and toilets
Governor's Mansion, 2.30 (very approximate)
University Club, 9.5 miles in, 3.00 (very approximate), 420 Summit Avenue, parking, toilets, lemonade
Rice Park/St Paul Library, 10.8 miles, 3.45 (very approximate) Finish
SHUTTLE Suggestions. There is covered or outside pay parking at Mpls Library. With friends one could arrange for a car at both ends. Share an Uber ride back. Ride the Light Rail back from St Paul (a few blocks walk from the Library)
