When I first moved to the Twin Cities area back in June of 2019, I was looking for a running store to pick up some running equipment for my training schedule of running events I signed up for and I remember seeing these blue t-shirts with an orange shoe print and it said "Mile in My Shoes". I remember on my way to catch the bus I went on my phone and instantly looked it up. I read everything about the organization and the mission and was instantly hooked. Only to find out that they were at capacity for run mentors. I remember at the time I put my name on the wait list but then COVID-19 happened. It wasn't until the fall of 2020 that I had the opportunity to serve on the MiMs Advocacy committee. Where I had the opportunity to learn more about issues of homelessness and incarceration within the state of Minnesota and the Twin Cities.
I finally got to experience my first MiMs run back in April of 2021 where I had the pleasure of being a Team Leader with Team Salvation Army-Adult Rehabilitation Center or Team Sally. Not only was this my first time getting to run with MiMs but I also was leading a MiMs team. Every run I had with the guys of the Sally was special. As a person who was actively in recovery myself, I found connecting to the men of the Sally but also throughout my runs would be able to have so many good belly laughs and deep conversations.
When I moved back to Minnesota I came back to MiMS but this time, I joined our first ever community based team, Team Nokomis a Veteran based team in collaboration with Every Third Saturday and other Veteran centric organizations. I was able to combine my love for running and my passion in serving Veterans on my weekly runs. I will never forget my run walks with one our members Andy, a Vietnam veteran who would tell me stories about his life experiences that I always left learning something.
But when you donate to MiMs, you are giving members like Andy the chance to build community. You are giving people a chance to be apart of something they never thought they could achieve. This year I know has been a challenge for many of us as costs are getting higher and people are facing unprecedented challenges and breaking news on a daily basis.
When you donate to Mile in my Shoes, your donation directly goes to benefit our resident members in the program in the following ways:
$15.00 (Hats & Gloves)
-$30.00 (Shirts/Shorts) -
-$50.00 (Shoes)
-$100.00 (Shoes & Gear)
-$150.00 (Twin Cities Marathon Race Fee)
To those who have donated previously and throughout the years I want to thank you for your donations. This Saturday I’m running roughly 14 miles in support of this organization with several other run mentors as part of our Tour de MiMs so if you see us out there, please feel free to give us a woo!
