The trades are an important part of our modern-day society. For example, plumbers play an integral role in connecting water supplies to businesses and homes. This is no different in Liberia. While Liberia's unemployment rate is around 40% (source: OECD), this does not account for the many entrepreneurial opportunities taken up by the local citizens. In Liberia, everyone finds a way to make money to survive. Those pursuing the trades find themselves with a unique opportunity to not only work for themselves but to have work during and after training.

Kadiatu Swarray graduated on September 11, 2021, with a cosmetology diploma and she shared her learning experience early this year. She graduated from African Methodist Episcopal University with a Bachelor of Public Administration (BPA) from November 25, 2020. Since graduating from college, she struggled to find a job. However, after four months of training with Uniting Distant Stars, she started earning about $50 to $60 USD a month with plaiting hair.

This story is consistent with many of our students. Those in our electrician course are another great example of this. Having access to the latest materials, the application of skills--85% hands-on training--is a key to their success inside and outside of the classroom. The average cost for supplies is around $150 a student. Your donation of $50 will support students like Kadiatu to have access to supplies like sewing machines, computers, electrical, plumbing, and much more. This is beyond a donation; it is an investment in improving their skills, their future, and the economic growth of their local communities.
