ANALOG DANCE WORKS

www.analogdanceworks.org

Analog Dance Works is a contemporary dance company created in January 2019 by Brenna Mosser in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Analog is committed to exploring intersections between dance and science. Our goal is to initiate dialogue about the facts of our present and the visions of our future through high-quality choreographic works and roundtable discussions.

Analog has presented work at ARENA DANCES’ Candy Box Dance Festival 2019, the Southern Theater’s Good Night at the Southern in August 2019, and Earthing Productions in May 2020 where we presented working renditions of Serve Id. Through its partnership with the University of Minnesota’s Outreach for Science and Art organization (OSA), Analog has hosted several discussions on campus about the intersection of dance and science.

Analog is continuing its partnership with OSA through the creation of its inaugural evening of dance focused on environmental issues, originally to be produced in September 2020 and postponed to May 2022 - this activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

What a time to start a new company! Support from both dance and science communities keep us motivated as  we navigate these strange waters. Although we are saddened to have to postpone 2 years because of the pandemic, we are taking the opportunity to engage with our communities in new ways. Here are some highlights:

  • Open Company classes for intermediate/advanced dancers ages 16+

  • Quarterly Zoom Roundtable discussions with members of the Scientific Community

  • Open Rehearsal Soirée in August

We are looking forward to making deeper connections and to continue research on our works that we will present in 2022 in our inaugural evening of dance entitled Tellus. This show will debut two works that will speak to the ecological environment of Minnesota: Serve Id by artistic director, Brenna Mosser and Cloud Cover by Analog company member, Zoë Koenig. Serve Id is a quartet that draws inspiration from an iconic animal found in Minnesota’s urban and rural landscapes: whitetail deer. This dance is influenced by the anatomy and behavior of deer and will bring Minnesota’s environment to the stage. Cloud Cover is a quartet that looks to the future as it seeks to understand different psychological responses to the climate crisis.

Woven into the base of Analog Dance Works is a commitment to sustainability through these three facets:

- Environmental impact

  • Props and costumes are found and used materials

  • Electronic communications to reduce paper waste

-Economic power

  • Our goal is to pay our artists a competitive wage with reliable hours

  • Within 5 years, we plan to hire our artists as employees as opposed to independent contractors

-Equitable opportunities

We thrive on diverse experiences and ways of thinking. We aim to be inclusive through these actions:

  • Analog prioritizes inclusivity in our dance auditions by creating an open call, meaning we do not vett dancers interested in attending the audition. Resumes and headshots are not asked for, as this is a deterrent to those who may not have them.

  • Analog is committed to being a safer space for individuals of all gender identities. We do not assume gender - we ask for persons’ pronouns (artists, patrons, committee members, partners, etc.) and only hold events where there are gender neutral bathrooms or arrange to accommodate. We announce these accommodations in advance of events so that all feel welcome.

These are small steps and we have so much more work to do. We look forward to expanding our work to have a greater impact throughout our 2021 programming.
