Hello Friends and Family!

Working in Sierra Leone, OneVillage Partners’ mission is to catalyze community-led transformation. We partner with rural communities to develop sustainable solutions to their most pressing self-identified challenges.  The community of Kambama (shown above), is participating in our Community Action Program and recently voted on what they want their first project to be: implementing a community-designed water facility to provide equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water.  The current lack of accessible clean water has led to poor health throughout the community.  Sickness and the time lost by having to fetch water from further away sources robs the entire community of more productive time and opportunities like children attending school.

Kambama's plans for the project include:

  • The community will install a 2,070 watt solar-powered pump and an intake gravity pipe to transmit clean water from the existing reservoir. They will also construct a concrete tower and install two 5,000 liter tanks to contain and distribute the water.
  • Volunteer-leaders will form and train a Water Management Committee composed of several community members to manage the use of the water system and its ongoing maintenance and repairs, ensuring its future sustainability.
  • Other trained volunteer-leaders will educate local households on good hygiene practices and how to safely store drinking water and prevent water contamination and the spread of diseases. The project is expected to benefit the entire community of 840 inhabitants across 112 households, including 390 children.

On average, communities implementing health-related projects like this one have seen a 75% reduction in diarrheal disease, the leading cause of child mortality in Sierra Leone. By installing a clean water facility, the community of Kambama will be able to improve their hygiene and sanitation practices, which will lead towards a healthier community.

For the month of November, OneVillage Partners is showcasing its newest community partner, Kambama, celebrating both Give to the Max Day and Giving Tuesday, and setting a goal of raising $10,000 to help fund Kambama's first development project. I'm committed to raising - with your help - just $500 of the goal. Your gift today will empower our community partner, Kambama, in their vision for a thriving, connected, and resilient community.
