There is no shame in admitting you have a gambling problem. Help is available at no cost and treatment works.
Northstar Problem Gambling Alliance( NPGA) is a nonprofit agency that focuses on awareness, education, prevention and advocacy for treatment of problem gambling in Minnesota. As the Minnesota affiliate to the National Council on Problem Gambling, we carry the message to Minnesotans throughout the state that problem gambling is an addictive condition that can be treated and recovery is possible.
As an alliance, we bring together all the stakeholders who are focused on gambling addiction, including treatment providers, recovering gamblers, researchers, elected officials and the gaming industry. All have a vested interest in minimizing the negative impact of gambling addiction and are committed to ensuring help is readily available.
We raise funds to support educational outreach throughout the state, speaking to community groups and organizations about problem gambling and the ways in which someone can be helped. We train professional counselors, business professionals, corrections officials and others on the topic of problem gambling.
We also advocate for treatment funding and fund research to better understand who is affected by gambling addiction and how to reach them through future programming efforts.
It is estimated that more than 120,000 people in Minnesota are affected by problem gambling. The financial, emotional and social impact can be devastating. Early intervention is key, and we seek to let people know there is no shame in admitting a gambling problem. Help is available. Visit our website at www.NorthstarProblemGambling.org. (NPGA is neutral on the topic of gambling and takes no position for or against. We work on the issue of problem gambling only.)
