*Tanisha, a mother of three, came to North Side knowing she was pregnant. She had just lost her job and had already made an appointment for an abortion. She had had two previous abortions, one at six weeks and one at twenty weeks.

Tanisha’s life is full of challenges. Her birth father is in prison for murder, as is the father of her first two children, and she wasn’t sure what her new boyfriend thought about all of this.

As Tanisha’s counselor, I knew she would not be able to view her unborn baby as a person until she was able to come to terms with her previous two abortions.

“Tanisha, have you thought about naming your babies? You know you can do that. I named my babies who I lost to miscarriages, and it helped me so much as I grieved their loss.”

Tanisha’s eyes widened. She was coming to terms with the grief that was just below the surface—the grief she felt and could now come to terms with as she realized she had lost two children.

“I give you permission to name your babies and ask them to forgive you. Then ask God to forgive you, and most importantly forgive youself.”

We sat together for some time. Her demeanor changed as she thought about all of this.

Then we broke down all of her fears and discussed the challenges she faced, one by one. I offered her feedback, another point of view, and most importantly, HOPE!

Then I asked her the most important question, “Tanisha, if I could wave a magic wand and make these difficulties go away, what does your heart tell you about having this baby?”

“I want to have this baby!” she almost seemed surprised herself at these words!

I helped her make an appointment for an ultra-sound and connected her with our pre-natal nurse so she could begin pre-natal care. She is also setting some goals for herself and her family in our Small Steps program, and earning the things she needs for her new baby along the way.

Tanisha had made the initial decision to give her child life and now we are journeying with her so she can continue to choose life for her child. We are eagerly awaiting Tanisha’s baby’s arrival!

This year, North Side is celebrating 35 years of service in the North Side Minneapolis community!

We opened our second location on the corner of Lowry Avenue and Sheridan this past February. At this location, we provide pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, STI testing, counseling, and full pre-natal care in conjunction with the Fairview Nurse midwives. Our pre-natal clinic at Lowry is already busy and we often see twenty pre-natal clients per clinic day!

At our Thomas location we provide material support
such as diapers, wipes, formula, and gently used maternity and baby clothes. This is also where we house our Small Steps/Earn While You Learn program. In this program, our pregnant and new mothers work with a counselor to set goals for themselves, such as finishing school or learning how to apply for jobs.
They also learn how to care for and raise their baby.

When a mom reaches the goals she set for herself, she earns baby
bucks. Baby bucks are used to buy new items from our in-house “baby store”, items such as strollers, cribs, toys, baby clothes, etc. This program helps North Side mothers not only earn what they need for their baby, but helps us develop caring relationships with them as they make many positive changes in their lives.

Our Small Steps program is so successful that we currently have a four-week waiting list to get started in the program. We are running out of space and staff hours to meet the needs of our many clients! And all of these services are provided free of charge, making your donation more critical than ever!
