The Facts: Nearly 229,000 people are diagnosed with lung and bronchus cancer in the United States each year. Lung cancer claims more lives than breast and colon cancers combined. Nearly twice as many women die of lung cancer as breast cancer, yet lung cancer research receives up to ten times less research funding. 70% of lung cancer cases are diagnosed in stage 3 or 4. We lose 150,000 Americans to this deadly disease each year; more than half are nonsmokers at diagnosis. Although progress has been made, the 5-year survival rate is only 20%. Culturally competent programs for communities of color are urgently needed. It is critical that we act now to get ahead of this disease and give future lung cancer patients a chance to win!
A Breath of Hope Lung Foundation strives to defeat lung cancer and bring hope to the many families burdened by this disease. Our mission is to improve lung cancer outcomes by funding U.S. research, raising awareness through education, and supporting survivors and their families.
A Breath of Hope is focusing on early detection in 2021 because we know it is the quickest way to save lives and the only realistic solution to the critical public health issue of lung cancer. We know there are three ways to fight the world's number one cancer killer:
Prevention - Teaching the public about the many causes of lung cancer and what it looks like when it strikes, helping smokers cut back or quit with NO judgment, testing our homes for radon, and avoiding exposure to harmful chemicals in the environment, home or workplace.
Research - Continually seeking more research dollars for earlier detection and new life-saving treatments, especially for late-stage diagnoses.
Earlier Detection - Diagnosing lung cancer in stage 1 or 2 when it is easiest to beat.
