The rapid unraveling of the federal resettlement system and deep funding cuts of 2025 and 2026 have changed things drastically in the world of refugee resettlement. Federal assistance for housing, employment, food and social services has been drastically cut back or eliminated. Once welcomed, new comers now find themselves without a safety net, assistance or guidance.

In response to these changes a small band of volunteers huddled around a table at Caribou Coffee in Roseville to discuss what they could do. And what they did was create Refugee Housing MN. RHMN’s initial goal was, and continues to be, to provide a “housing safety net” for refugees admitted to the US through official government programs but left stranded by funding cuts.

Since its founding in March of 2025, RHMN has made great strides in its work with refugees. The group has:

* Helped over 170 refugees —about ½ of them children—find or keep housing in the Twin Cities area.

* Distributed dozens of gift cards to those facing crisis

* Helped guide dozens of families toward self-sufficiency, and become vital members of their communities

* Worked with clients from Afghanistan, Ukraine, Somalia, Cuba, Cameroon, DR Congo, Venezuela, Ethiopia and other countries

* Become certified as an official 501(c)3 non-profit organization

* Helped with community education via presentations on refugee resettlement

RHMN has grown through donations from dozens of individuals and faith-based organization including Trinity Lutheran Church, First Presbyterian Church of Stillwater, Ascension Episcopal Church, Boutwell’s Social Justice Committee, the Eastern Twin Cities Islamic Center, St. Croix Valley Rotary Clubs, Christ Lutheran Church of Marine, the Minnesota Presbytery and Macalester Plymouth United Church.
