Accession Projects presents a limited-edition artwork by Minneapolis-based artist Harriet Bart to benefit In Black Ink.

In commemoration of George Floyd’s life, artist Harriet Bart created Pleas/Please, 2020 - a collection of objects for contemplating the power of language. Both Harriet's and  In Black Ink's work has been guided by the belief and desire to uncover the role of art both visual and literary, as a way to tell the stories of those whose voices have long been stifled, the genesis of this project and the collaboration emerged after the callous killing of George P. Floyd here, in Minnesota.  We stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Movement, the BIPOC, and all other local and global communities in demanding equitable, humane treatment for all. In the words of the late, great, Toni Morrison,  "this is precisely the time when artists go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear. We speak, we write, we do language. ..."

The artwork is published by Accession Projects and 100% of the proceeds will benefit In Black Ink, a Minnesota-based non-profit organization focused on literacy and publishing. In Black Ink creates spaces where the stories and voices of people of African heritage are celebrated, documented, and archived through publications, professional development training/opportunities, and public presentations.

One edition of Harriet Bart’s Pleas/Please, 2020 is a gift with your $100+ donation to In Black Ink (while supplies last). For more information about Harriet Bart and the Accession Projects, please visit www.AccessionProjects.com.

Harriet Bart creates evocative content through the narrative power of objects, the theater of installation, and the intimacy of artists books. She has a deep and abiding interest in the personal and cultural expression of memory; it is at the core of her work. Using bronze and stone, wood and paper, books and words, everyday and found objects, Bart’s work signifies a site, marks an event, and draws attention to imprints of the past as they live in the present.

The artist's 2020 Weisman Art Museum retrospective Abracadabra and Other Forms of Protection and its corresponding monograph have made unique creative contributions to contemporary American art.

In Black Ink (IBI) provides publishing arts initiatives and opportunities for communities that have been disenfranchised historically, and continue to be presently. IBI’s cultural literacy programming mitigates the damage of economic, educational, and cultural inequities that are the result of past and current prejudice and discrimination.

The name In Black Ink invokes the spirit of IBI’s mission to help develop and support the African heritage community in Minnesota in the publishing arts industry.  IBI was established in 2018 as a non-profit 501 c 3 charitable institution.
