GoodSports International Inc. began in Slovakia in 1994. It took a new direction in 2005 when Major Russell Chun and former Major League pitcher Tom Johnson moved to Hungary and Slovakia respectively to direct the national programs. The sphere of influence includes orphans in Bojnice, Slovakia and Miskolc, Hungary, Syrian refugees in Gabcekovo, Slovakia along with daily programs for youth in both countries.  GoodSports Slovakia while registered in Granbury, Texas is also a registered non-profit in Minnesota and an official NGO in Slovakia. 

Tom and Debbie Johnson direct the program in Slovakia, which has two locations, Devinska Nova Ves (Bratislava) and Prievidza.  Hundreds of youth have been served during the past 12 years; and one Josef Putak was a victim in Slovakia's the only mass killing/shooting spree which took place a couple hundred meters from the GoodSports Youth Center https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Bratislava_shooting, underscoring the need for positive, character-building options for young people.

Baseball has played an important role in the program from the early days of GoodSports. Two baseball fields were recently built through a partnership with a local baseball club and GoodSports Slovakia. Summer camps, tournaments and other special events compliment a daily after-school and weekend program. Running a values/faith based program for youth and families is new in Slovakia and making it affordable (usually free) clearly sets it apart. Four full-time and one part-time Slovak staff work with a team of volunteers (including some parents) in providing a "family" atmosphere for participating youth. Three of the four full-time staff themselves grew up in the program.

The challenge we face is raising financial support. What we raise goes toward program expenses and salaries.
