WHAT WE DO

At Green Card Voices, our work is anchored in sharing immigrant stories to combat harmful stereotypes and cultivate a sense of solidarity in the community.

Located in Minneapolis, our mission is ambitious: to bridge the gap between immigrants and the community. We do this by documenting first-person narratives and publishing them in books, online, and in traveling exhibits. 

Since Green Card Voices’ inception in 2013, we have been honored to highlight the personal narratives of over 500 refugees and immigrants representing more than 150 countries, who are from Minnesota, New York, New Jersey, California, North Dakota, Georgia, and Wisconsin. 

Over the past decade, our content and programs have reached nearly 2 million people nationwide. Your generous gift empowers us to continue preserving first-person narratives for future generations, and to expand our reach even further!

OUR RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

1. We published the second volume of our bilingual Children's Graphic Novel series, Voice for Refuge. Storyteller Zaynab Abdi shared her vulnerable story in Arabic and English and organized 10 events in the Twin Cities and New York, with over 500 attendees in total. The book was illustrated by Egyptian-American artist Achraf El-Attar and recently won a silver medal in the Moonbeam Book Awards.  (https://moonbeamawards.com/103/2023-winners)

2. We published an anthology of thirty stories of Afghan youth in MY CITY WAS A SPARKLING JEWEL:  Voices of Newcomer Youth from Afghanistan.

WHAT WE WANT TO ACCOMPLISH

Our commitment to a vision of inclusive communities through shared narratives remains strong. 

Our curriculum evokes critical insights and empathy toward immigrant and refugee experiences.  Our materials support inclusive multi-ethnic, multi-racial communities and a vibrant democracy. Our work is crucial in reshaping the narrative about immigrant experiences, and with your generous support this Give to the Max, we can build a more welcoming community, and country where everyone belongs. 

For this year’s Give to the Max, we are raising a minimum of $10,000 to: 

1. Publish Volume 3 of our bilingual Graphic Novel series, Chasing Dreams, Becoming a Doctor, in both English and Khmer.

Chasing Dreams, Becoming a Doctor tells the inspiring story of Kim Uy and her ability to adapt to cultures, learn languages other than Khmer—Chinese and English—and succeed wherever she goes.

2. Publish Volume 4 of our bilingual Graphic Novel series Tinkering Towards My Spark, in both English and Hmong.

Tinkering Towards My Spark follows Thai Chang, a Hmong American who grew up in a refugee camp in Thailand. His love of science and tinkering led him to a fulfilling career as an Exhibit Developer and Fabricator at the Science Museum of Minnesota. 

3. Expand our Story Stitch program in various community spaces, public schools, higher education, and workplaces to promote understanding for immigrant and diverse voices to be heard and understood.

Green Card Voices is a Minneapolis-based, nationally growing non profit that connects immigrants and their communities through multimedia storytelling. We record the first person narratives of immigrants, and publish them in books, online and in traveling exhibits. So far, we have recorded the stories of over 500 immigrants and refugees who are originally from over 140 countries and now reside in Minnesota, New York, New Jersey, California, North Dakota, Georgia and Wisconsin.
